What is Hot Sauce? Hot Sauce can be made with a wide variety of ingredients. Almost anything edible can be used. But the common ingredient is any variety of chile pepper. Though the name implies a burn, not all Hot Sauces are hot.
Hot sauces are most commonly made with a base of either vinegar, tomatoes, mustard, or carrots. Then with the addition of chile peppers, or chile extract known as capsaicin, you have the basics of a hot sauce. Other common ingredients included in these sauces is salt, sugar, fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, honey and black pepper. Though there are no limitations to what ingredients make up a hot sauce.
Hot sauces are widely known for dipping food into, or topping food with. But their use can cross into all other categories. Many hot sauces can be used as marinades, wing sauces, glazes, or even as an ingredient to add to any other type of sauce or dish.
